The Rescue: Phase One

Kalev and a five-man rescue team found their way along the low contours of the outer barrier island. Clay camouflaged their faces, and beige scarves covered their dark heads. They crossed to the lagoon and found the shore point closest to the pirate ship. Crouched on the sand, they pulled off their sandals and blended in with the moonlit beach.

Kalev held up his hand and gestured: Wait.

They watched Bitias direct his torch-lit boat across the lagoon. A few minutes later, Nunshin’s boat appeared and met Bitias at a midway point between the pirate ship and the Arbiter.

Kalev gave the sign: “Go, go, go.”

He adjusted the dagger and cudgel in his sash and the coil of rope across his chest and waded soundlessly into the water until only his head was visible as he moved smoothly toward the pirate ship. The others waited a few beats and followed at intervals behind him.
