The Rescue: Phase Two

The rescue team gathered in the dark water beneath the ship and watched as Kalev slithered like an octopus up the side, finding a finger and foot hold in the tiniest of crevices in the wood. At the rowing deck, he tied the rope around a post and allowed it to drop to the rest of his team. While they climbed, he reached the upper deck and peered over the edge, counting pirates and weapons and taking note of anything that could be used against them: a torch, a hammer, a rusty iron rod. He descended and took a few steps toward the hold but stopped when he saw the two guards posted there. By now the rescue team were crouched in the shadows of the rowing deck. Kalev returned to them. It looked like an easy mission to overpower the guards and grab the girl; nevertheless, he silently gave numbers and locations of the pirates on deck. He gave assignments and, fully aware that Bitias could not keep Nunshin engaged for long, signaled the command: “go.”
